Session Synopsis The Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (hereinafter “KRICT”) will hold the KRICT R&D Forum at EKC 20105. This forum is to discuss on recent research trends and advanced technologies in generating and saving solar energy by exchanging and sharing expertise and knowledge. For that, we have set a special theme, “Chemical innovation for harvesting solar energy”. Each invited speaker as research specialists who are from various organizations such as EPRL, CSEM, and HZB etc. will give a talk and discuss about their presentation. In this KRICT R&D forum, especially, it will be highlighted chemistry innovations to enable the sustainable technologies that are revolutionizing the way we harvest solar energy and store energy. Especially, one of speakers, Dr. Sang Il Seok will present his research outcomes to optimize the sequence in which solvents are added during the deposition process, resulting in an intermediate crystalline compound that turns into a dense and uniform film on heating. This led to a power-conversion efficiency exceeding 18%, which is higher than previous values for perovskite solar cells reported in the scientific literature.

    Profile: Dr. Joung is Senior Research Scientist of MARINTEK, responsible for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) research, Fluid-Structure Interface (FSI) research, and the development of renewable energy research systems. Primary activities include Ocean Energy System (OES) projects, Energy Efficient Offshore Service Vessel (EEOSV) projects and collaborative research with research communities world-wide such as CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Australia), KRISO (Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering, Korea), JAMSTEC (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, Japan) etc. Dr. Joung has a variety of experience before he joined MARINTEK in 2013. He has had an experience in Korea and Japan as a researcher and a post-doctoral research scholar for the last fourteen years (2000-2013). During his time in Korea (KRISO and Pusan National University) and Japan (RIAM and Kyusyu University), he has endeavoured for developing underwater vehicles by using structural and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis tools. Dr. Joung is a rare person who holds two Ph. D degrees in different fields - structural and CFD analysis area.

    Profile: Dr. Ji Sup YOON is a Vice President in charge of Convergence Technology Department at KAERI, which he joined in 1987. He also worked at Oak Ridge National Lab. and School of Advanced International Study at Johns Hopkins Univ. as a visiting scholar for several years. Session Synopsis Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) is the nation's center for promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy in Korea. It was established in 1959 by government to build a foundation for national nuclear energy self-reliance. The main mission is to develop technologies for an advanced nuclear reactor, proliferation resistant nuclear fuel cycle, and other advanced nuclear technologies with the prime goal of securing a nuclear safety. Since its establishment, KAERI has grown to a global nuclear energy research institute engaging in a wide range of R&D activities. In this session, KAERI’s history and its achievement will be briefly introduced and major research area will be introduced in more detail. (1) Decontamination and Dismantling The goal of D&D research is to secure the key technologies for NPP by 2021 to prepare Korean old reactors decommissioning. Research projects include system decontamination, remote dismantling, decommissioning waste treatment, and site remediation and assessment. (2) SMART (System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor) SMART is a small sized integrated modular reactor for electricity generation as well as seawater desalination. The standard design of SMART was completed which was approved by NSSC in 2013. It is served as the first SMR with approved standard Design in the world. Recently, the MoU for SMART partnership with Saudi Arabia was concluded. (3) Radiation Application Technology Radiation technology and its application is one of the important research area at KAERI. This research is being conducted at the Advanced Radiation Technology Institute (ARTI) which is a KAERI-affiliated institute in the radiation fusion technology field. ARTI is devoted to the development of radiation technology such as advanced materials for industry, new crop resources, biotechnology, food processing, environmental treatment, radiation medical technology and new concepts for radiation instrument. (4) SFR and pyroprocessing For the sustantainability of nuclear energy, the spent nuclear fuels should be properly managed. Various management option of spent fuel is now under discussion on the basis of public consensus in Korea. KAERI considers a SFR Fuel cycle system with pyroproecss is one of the most promising options in terms of reducing volume and radiotoxity of spent fuel to be disposed. Wide variety of research performed by KAERI will be introduced in this session. (5) Nuclear Safety Research The wide spectrum of R&D of thermal-hydraulic safety has been covered to develop advanced light water reactors (ALWR) such as the APR1400, APR+, and SMART. The ATLAS (Advanced Thermal-hydraulic Loop for Accident Simulation) facility is one of the three world-class integral effect test facilities used to simulate an advanced LWR. TROI (Test for Real cOrium Interaction) is being used for steam explosion tests with prototypic reactor core materials. In addition, the VESTA (Verification Ex-vessel corium STAbilization) facility to investigate corium behavior in a reactor cavity was recently launched. (6) Nuclear Fusion As well as the LWR and Gen. IV reactors such as VHTR and SFR, nuclear fusion engineering for fusion reactor has been developed with a focus on the plasma heating system, breeding blanket and plasma facing component development.

    Profile: PARK, Chung Hae is a full professor at Department of Polymers and Composites Technology & Mechanical Engineering, Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Douai (France) and the leader of “Composites and Hybrid Structures” group working on polymer composites manufacturing processes, structural mechanics and non-destructive evaluation. Before joining Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Douai, he used be an assistant and associate professor at University of Le Havre (France) and a senior research engineer at LG Chem (Korea). He obtained his BSc and MSc in mechanical engineering at Seoul National University (Korea). Especially, he obtained dual PhD degrees at Seoul National University and at Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Saint-Etienne (France), which was the first case at Seoul National University. He also obtained diploma of habilitation (Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches) in mechanics at University of Le Havre.
